Deep Thoughts by Sparky Polastri

Tales of a crazed dance, musical theatre and cheerleading coach. I've got the blonde, I've got the big smile, I've got the loud voice. I'm missing the boobs.

Oh yeah, they're 11

Over the past three years, I've had several comments from audience members about how they can't believe how professional our show is, and how well the kids do.

This always surprises me. I guess I just have really high standards, and I'm not happy with a rinky dink "kids" performance. And they always live up to my high standards, mostly.

I don't even notice now that I've got these kids working like trained monkeys, and that they're putting out some pretty incredibly stuff for their young age.

However, the other day, we had each member of the cast write a biography to put under their picture in the lobby of the theatre come show time. Just a little extra that we started last year. The students and their parents LOVE it.

But, it's much easier to remember how young they are looking at some of the biographies that were handed in (sic):

-Hi my name is E. I play a gambaler. I like sports and beanie babys I play soceer and basketball a lot and I had lots of fun doing Guys and Dolls.

-This is my second play. I enjoying reading, drawing, playing with lego and watching movies and TV and I am romantic.

-I'm in grade 7. This is my first time I've been in the school play. My favourite colour is pink and black. I love to dance. And I have a cat named Missy.

-My name is K and i'm 13 years old. I enjoy volleyball, basketball, baseball and I love to read. I have one dog, COco, and a sister, I have red hair and brown eyes.

From the man of few words:
-Grade 6, my first show, having fun.

Apparently I'm lucky that most of these kids find their way TO the theatre each night.
