It's audition time!
Ok faithful blog readers, fear not. Auditions for the school show start tonight.
Hopefully I'll many amusing anecdotes in the coming little while.
Already I've had a couple children give me ultimatums.
Ok, maybe ultimatum is the wrong word. Three kids in the show are in a school district choir. They are going to be away in the Yukon (apparently choir is popular in the Yukon?) the weekend of our big dress rehearsals. I'm usually pretty strict that nobody can go away during that weekend, but I make exceptions in special cases. Ok, you got me, I'll make exceptions if the kids are talented and I want them in my show.
So, I've told them that I won't make them choose between two things they love to do, but obviously, they won't be able to get lead roles if they're going to be away for so many important rehearsals. Two out of three were fine with that.
The third tells me that "she's not going to the Yukon anymore." I asked if she was kicked out of choir? She didn't find me amusing. She said "well, if I get the lead role, then I won't go to the Yukon". Oooooh.....pressure.
The second ultimatum kid is likely going to be a key player on my blog in coming months. We'll call him Jamie. Jamie is involved in community theatre, and thinks he's WAY better than he actually is. When I first met Jamie, he told me "Oh! You were the choreographer for the show I auditioned for in the summer!". I didn't remember him - not a good sign of talent. He obviously hadn't gotten into the show, but I told him that it's not always about talent, sometimes it's just about fit, etc. Basically a head-pat, feel good kinda deal.
He tells me "that's ok, I got into the next show at the same theatre, and they said that that director is WAY pickier". Umm....ok.
So, this kid is also the kid of 1000 questions. ALL relating to him and only to him (so no help to any other kid). For example:
- If I get in the show, will my hair colour be a problem? (the kid had dyed his hair SLIGHTLY darker than normal).
- I have another rehearsal at 7pm (in a location 15 minutes away from the school), so would it be ok if I only came to a little bit of the rehearsal that starts at 6:30?
The kid is in another show, and yesterday came up to me and said "my mom said that if you want me for the lead role that I am allowed to quit the other show". Well, rest assured, the other show can HAVE ya.
And, if anyone remembers my "Bambi" kid from last year who cried during auditions, and then kept adding in random arm motions and pratfalls, he has decided that this year his goal is to get a speaking part. And he's auditioning for a fairly large speaking part at that. I may just give it to him, purely for entertainment value for me and my blog readers. :)
Stay tuned!
