Deep Thoughts by Sparky Polastri

Tales of a crazed dance, musical theatre and cheerleading coach. I've got the blonde, I've got the big smile, I've got the loud voice. I'm missing the boobs.

So I broke the streak last night....

I am a horrible, horrible person. Last night, after 3 years of poker-faced auditions and successfully staring at a point on the wall, I lost it. I laughed at a kid. He turned out to be not THAT bad, but I think he was nervous starting and the first two lines came out sounding what I suspect two angry cats in a confined space would sound like.

And it started, and I couldn't stop it. Trying to stop it would probably have made even more noticeable choking sounds. So, I did what any self-respecting, child-ego-saving director would do. I got up from the table, turned around and turned it into a "really bad coughing fit".

Thankfully, the kid was using a large book to sing from and had it up in front of his face, and didn't seem to notice my outburst at all. In fact, another panel member even gave him a really high score in the concentration category because "he sang right through your little 'coughing fit'". Ugh, horrible. The worst part was afterwards when I told him I was sorry for interrupting with my coughing and he said something like "yeah, that sounded like you swallowed something wrong." Yeah....your pride.

So how was it that I couldn't hold it together for a kid who made a fairly common horrible noise, but when it came to one of the funniest line screw ups I'd ever heard, I kept a straight face?

The kid is saying a line, accusing one of the other characters of keeping tabs on how much cheesecake is sold, in order to win a bet. In other words, "I don't want to accuse you of clocking the cheesecake."

Only, the kid says "I don't want to accuse you of cocking the cheesecake."

That's good, cause you could be sued for slander for something like that. Is this an American Pie spinoff I didn't see?

"You know, pie is warm, but cheesecake is much creamier. "

Last day of auditions is up today. I've been up stressing since 5:30am because we have so many talented girls this year competing for parts. I'll keep you posted.
